It required some assembly of bolts with an allen wrench that comes with it and took about half an hour to put together. Two plastic parts came broken - one of the parts covering a wheel and the knob that adjusts the tension. I haven't gotten them replaced yet because the chair is functional but the manufacturer does include instructions for immediately replacing any broken parts.
